about

Welcome to my first LP! Man, that feels weird to say. Really hope you enjoy it. :D

Should I write more? To me, this album represents a lot of things. First, the possibility that I can make music that I'm proud to put my name to, which for years felt impossible, but also like a thing I needed to keep trying at. It represents me learning Ableton, learning sound, learning sonic narrative. These tracks are my very first forays into those things. Most of the songs, at least in rough form, came together very quickly - often in just the span of one night or a few days. I spent months just idea-generating like that, which helped me learn how to get into a creative flow musically and how to keep digging for better ideas. But the refinement of the very best of those ideas into finished tracks, and ultimately an album, constantly pushing myself to revisit and improve each of them, ALSO took months and taught me a completely other set of things, like how to self-edit, which sometimes means making the tricky decision of leaving out something you love that just isn't working.

I've come to see both aspects as important - fully embodying the creative process for a while, but also eventually honing it into a deliverable thing, some end result. By holding myself to completing and releasing this, I ensure I keep moving forward, that people can hear what I'm up to, and that they might gain some enjoyment out of it. It's also exciting to establish a sonic palette and level of quality that I can then try to refine, evolve, or completely redesign with future releases. And maybe most importantly, it mentally unburdens me of this material and lets me feel even more open and 'fresh' for the next thing, whatever that may be.

P.S. 'Absorption' = the taking in and processing of many different things (the thousands of songs I've heard, people I've met, experiences I've had), the end result of which (me / this album) becomes a new thing unto itself.
